Showering instructions

To reduce the risk of infection we will provide you with an antiseptic sponge to use in the shower. You may be asked to shower the night before and again on the morning of your surgery or procedure. Use fresh sponges and towels for each shower. Ask the nursing staff for supplies when needed.

Before your shower

  • remove your nail polish and clean under your fingernails and toenails
  • DO NOT shave the area of your surgery. If hair needs to be removed, our nursing staff will attend to this with special clippers.

After your shower

  • dry yourself thoroughly paying special attention to skin folds and in between your toes
  • DO NOT apply deodorant or talc before your surgery or procedure
  • put on clean clothing and underwear

Showering twice per day is recommended in hot and humid conditions, especially after going home from hospital.

How to shower before your surgery or procedure

  1. wash your hair with your usual shampoo the night before your surgery or procedure
  2. wash your face with your usual cleanser
  3. wash the rest of your body with the antiseptic sponge provided, beginning with the proposed site of your surgery or procedure. Pay special attention to your armpits
  4. wash genitals, buttocks and anal region last.

Showering AFTER your surgery or procedure

  1. wet your body
  2. wash your face with your usual cleanser
  3. wash the rest of your body with the antiseptic sponge, beginning gently with the surgical site. Pay special attention to your armpits
  4. wash genitals, buttocks and anal region last.
